Movie Making with PowerPoint 2010: Universal Design Learning Unit
Subject: Digital Storytelling
Grade Level: 5th
Duration: 4 weeks
Subject Area: Library Skills (Media Center Flex Time)
Unit Description: The unit plan that I am incorporating with UDL technology is an essential part of my instruction because digital storytelling is one of the few lessons that I teach to all my students at Matt Wilson Elementary School. Students will learn what constitutes good digital storytelling and use Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 to create presentations and save these presentations as movie files. Once digital stories are created, students will self-assess, peer-assess, and post their digital stories to the school library media’s Wikispace.
The unit plan is aligned with the following standards: ISTE NETS-S Standards Targeted in this Unit:
1. Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students:
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.
Unit Goals:
Students will be able to:
Become familiar with multimedia/presentation graphics terminology.
Plan and design basic presentations.
Create, save, and view basic presentations.
Apply animation to slides.
Save their presentations as movie files and not presentation files
Add images and sound to digital movies.
Add transitions to the digital movies that do not distract but enhance end product.
After finishing both modules, students will be able to create digital stories using PowerPoint 2010.
Self-evaluate presentations.
Display and peer-critique movie with peers.
Learning Objectives: The student will:
Will be able to create and evaluate a digital story using PowerPoint 2010.
Will acquire basic knowledge and skills of multimedia/presentation software and digital storytelling.
Unit Explanation/Rationale
Fourth and fifth grade students need to be exposed to project based assessment tools that incorporate technology into the assessment of 21st century learners. Digital storytelling is a project based learning experience that teachers across the curriculum can easily integrate into their classes. By instructing students on how to create digital stories during their media center instructional time with PowerPoint 2010, classroom teachers will benefit from having students already trained with creating digital stories without having to worry about teaching students the art of storytelling or wondering whether or not the technology will be available for students to use in the classroom. All classes have five computers with Microsoft Office 2010 installed on them, so the teachers will have the resources to offer students this method of assessment.
